1. Every month, a man consumes 20 kg of rice and 8 kg of wheat. The price of rice is 20% of the price of wheat, resulting in a total expenditure of ₹300 per month for rice and wheat combined. If the price of wheat is increased by 20%, what percentage reduction in rice consumption is needed to maintain the same expenditure of ₹300? (Given that the price of rice and consumption of wheat is constant.) [SSC CGL 12/09/2024 (2nd Shift)]

Correct Answer: (a) 40%

2. In an election between two candidates, y% of the voters did not vote. 10% of the votes cast were declared invalid, while all the valid votes were cast in favour of either of the two candidates. The candidate who got 59.375% of the valid votes cast was declared elected by 2484 votes. If the number of people eligible to vote in that election was 16,000, what is the value of y? [SSC CGL 09/09/2024 (1st Shift)]

Correct Answer: (c) 8
Solution:

3. Last year, Geeta's monthly salary was 12,000 and Seeta's monthly salary was ₹10,000. This year, Geeta's monthly salary is 14,400, while Seeta's monthly salary is 12,500. If the percentage increase in Seeta's monthly salary this year over her monthly salary last year is denoted by x%, and the percentage increase in Geeta's monthly salary this year over her monthly salary last year is denoted by y%, then what is the value of (x-y/y) × 100)% ?  [SSC CHSL 04/07/2024 (3rd Shift)]

4. In an election between two candidates, the defeated candidate secured 42% of the valid votes polled and lost the election by 2545800 votes. If 365500 votes were declared invalid and 30% people did not cast their vote, what was the approximate number of people (in millions) in the electorate who did NOT cast their votes? [SSC CHSL 03/07/2024 (1st Shift)]

Correct Answer: (a) 7
Solution:Let the total valid votes be V.
The defeated candidate received 42% of the valid votes and lost by 2545800 votes.
Therefore, the winning candidate received = 100% - 42%
= 58% of the valid votes
The difference in votes between the two candidates = 58% - 42% = 16% of the valid votes.
V × 16% = 2545800 ⇒ V=15,911,250
Total votes polled = 15,911,250 + 365500= 16 ,276,750
30% of people did not cast their votes so 70% did cast their vote.
70% =16,276,750
(people who did not cast their votes) 30% = 6,975,750 So, approximate number of people in the electorate who did not cast their votes is 7 million

5. At the beginning of day 1 of a month, Rajesh has 500 eggs. He sells 20% of the eggs by the end of the day and added b% of the eggs at the beginning of the next day and sold 20% of the eggs at the end of the next day. This pattern continued up to the end of the third day of the month when he is left with 1024 eggs. The value of b is equal to: [SSC CHSL 02/07/2024 (4th Shift)]

Correct Answer: (c) 100

6. In an election between P, R and S, 1/10 of the total votes polled are invalid. Votes polled in favour of R and S are half of the total votes polled, and they get equal votes. Due to a fault in the machine, half of the votes of S and half of the invalid votes are counted additionally in favour of R. What is the overall percentage of votes secured by R due to the fault? [SSC CPO 28/06/2024 (3rd Shift)]

Correct Answer: (d) 42.5%
Solution:

7. In an election between A and B, every fifth vote polled was marked as invalid by the machine. In the remaining votes, A wins the election with a margin of 2500 votes or 10% of the total votes polled, over B. If 90% of the invalid votes would have been in favour of B, then which of the following would have been the result of the election? [SSC CPO 28/06/2024 (2nd Shift)]

Correct Answer: (a) B would have won by 8%
Solution:Let the total no of votes be 100 unit
No of Invalid votes = 100 x (1/5) = 20 unit
No of valid votes = 100 - 20 = 80 unit
A + B = 80 ------(i)
A - B = 10 ------(ii)
Solving eqn. (i) and (ii) we get;
A = 45 unit, B = 35 unit
Now, If 90% of invalid votes have been in favour of B. then,
No of votes would have received by B = 35 unit + 90% of 20 = 35 +18 = 53 unit % of votes by which B won = 53 - 45 = 8%

8. In an election, 12% of the voters in the voter list did not cast their votes, whereas 84 voters cast their ballot papers blank. There were only two candidates: Ramagya and Shravan. The winner, Ramagya, was supported by 54% of all the voters in the list. He got 1456 more votes than his rival, Shravan. Find the total number of voters in the list. [SSC CPO 27/06/2024 (1st Shift)]

Correct Answer: (d) 6860
Solution:Let the total no. of voters in the list be 100%
Then the no. of valid votes = 88% - 84
No. of votes received by winner = 54%
No. of votes received by loser = (88% - 84) -54% = 34% - 84
According to question, 54% - (34% - 84) = 1456
20% + 84 = 1456 ⇒ 20% = 1372
Then, 100% = 1372 × 5 = 6860

9. In an examination, there were two papers, A and B, and the maximum mark in each of the two papers was 10. However, the weights assigned to papers A and B were in the ratio 2:1, respectively. Riddhi scored 8 out of 10 in Paper B, and an overall 70% in the examination. How much did she score in Paper A out of 10? [Matriculation Level 25/06/2024 (Shift-1)]
