CAPF (AC) 2015 (Paper-1) (Question 51-100)

Total Questions: 50

41. In an examination, there are three subjects 'A', 'B' and 'C'. A student has to pass in each subject. 20% students failed in 'A', 22% students failed in 'B' and 16% students failed in 'C'. The total number of students passing the whole examination lies between :

Correct Answer: (b) 42% and 78%
Solution:Let total number of students be 100.

In A → Fail students = 20 and Pass students = 80

In B → Fail students = 22 and Pass students = 78

In C → Fail students = 16 and Pass students = 84

Maximum number of students who pass all the three subjects

= 78 + 78 + 78 = 234

Minimum number of students who fail in all three subjects

= 42 + 42 + 42 = 126.

Maximum percentage = (234 × 100)/300 = 78%

Minimum percentage = (126 × 100)/300 = 42%

42. Which one among the following is NOT a minor plate?

Correct Answer: (d) Antarctica
Solution:There are seven major plates on the earth. They are the African, Antarctic, Eurasian, North American, South American, India-Australian, and Pacific plates. The Hawaiian Islands were created by the Pacific Plate, which is the world's largest plate at 39,768,522 square miles.

There are eight minor plates. Some of the minor plates include the Arabian, Caribbean, Nazca, and Scotia plates. The Juan de Fuca Plate is the smallest of the earth's tectonic plates. It is approximately 250,000 square kilometers. Therefore, option (d) is correct.

43. The trees of tropical rainforest have buttress roots because:

Correct Answer: (d) the buttresses have to bear the mechanical load of hardwoods
Solution:In the rainforest, the tall trees often have buttress roots on their sides. Buttress roots allow a tree growing on thin soil to grow high into the air. They are large, wide roots on all sides of a shallowly rooted tree.

They provide support for that tree, preventing it from falling. When the roots spread horizontally, they can cover a wider area for collecting nutrients. They stay near the upper soil layer because all the main nutrients are found there. Therefore, option (d) is correct.

44. It is reported that there is an ongoing decrease in the pH value of ocean water because of global warming. It happens due to :

Correct Answer: (a) larger uptake of CO₂ by ocean water
Solution:Ocean acidification is defined as the process of a decrease in the pH of the earth's oceans. The process is caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The main cause of the process of ocean acidification is the burning of fossil fuels.

The concern with ocean acidification is that it can lead to the decreased production of the shells of shellfish and other aquatic life with calcium carbonate shells, as well as some other physiological challenges for marine organisms. Therefore, option (a) is correct.

45. Match List-I with List-II and select the correct answer using the code given below the Lists:

List-I (Day)List-II (Occasion)
A. 11th July1. Human Rights Day
B. 5th June2. Hiroshima Day
C. 6th August3. International Environment Day
D. 10th December4. World Population Day

Code:ABCD
(a)1324
(b)1234
(c)4231
(d)4321
Correct Answer: (b)
Solution:World population day is celebrated on 11th July every year. It was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. International Environment Day is celebrated on 5th June every year to increase awareness for the protection of the environment.

Hiroshima day is celebrated on 5th June every year to remind the bombing attack on Hiroshima by the United States during World War II. Human Rights Day is celebrated on 10th December every year to increase awareness regarding human rights. Therefore, the correct option is (d).

46. 65% students in a class like cartoon movies, 70% like horror movies, and 75% like war movies. What is the smallest percent of students liking all the three types of movies?

Correct Answer: (a) 10%
Solution:Percentage of students who don't like cartoon movies = 100 - 65 = 35%

Percentage of students who don't like horror movies = 100 - 70 = 30%

Percentage of students who don't like war movies = = 100 - 75 = 25%

Maximum number of students who don't like horror movies = 35 + 30 + 25 = 90%

Minimum numbers of students who like all the three type of movies = 100 - 90 = 10%

47. Consider the following diagram :

If the number of elements in 'A' is twice the number of elements in 'B', then X is:

Correct Answer: (b) 93
Solution:Number of elements in 'B'

= 15 + 5 + 12 + 32 = 64

∴ Number of elements in ' A' = 64 × 2 = 128 .

∴  x + 5 + 12 + 18 = 128

x + 35 = 128

x = 128 - 35

x = 93

48. From which among the following pairs of species, a small quantity of fine quality wool is obtained in India?

Correct Answer: (a) Pashmina goats and Angora rabbits
Solution:Angora wool is a special animal fibre thatis obtained by Angora rabbits. Pashmina goats are well known for their wool. Both these animals are found in the state of J&K. Pashmina can also be defined as the down fibre derived from cashmere goats with a diameter of 30 microns or less.

The Angora rabbit is one of the oldest types of domestic rabbit. Rabbits do not possess the same allergy-causing qualities as many other animals, and therefore their wool is an important alternative. Therefore, option (a) is correct.

49. The following item consists of two statements, Statement I and Statement II. Examine these two statements carefully and select the correct answer using the code given below:

Statement-I: All the energy received by the earth is from the Sun through electro-magnetic radiation

Statement-II: The earth also radiates back all the received energy through various ways to maintain the heat budget of the planet

Correct Answer: (b) Both the statements are individually true but Statement II is NOT the correct explanation of Statement I
Solution:All the energy received by the earth is from the sun through electromagnetic radiation. Solar radiation includes visible light, ultraviolet light, infrared, radio waves, X-rays, and gamma rays. There are various ways in which the earth also radiates back all the received energy for maintaining the heat budget of the planet.

Global warming occurs when the earth receives more energy than it gives back to space. Therefore, both the statements are true but Statement II is not the correct explanation of Statement II. Therefore, the correct option is (b).

50. Which one among the following substances is NOT a 'green house' gas?

Correct Answer: (d) Nitrogen
Solution:The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the earth's surface. Some of the major greenhouse gases are carbon dioxides, methane, chlorofluorocarbon, sulphur dioxide. The gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and argon are not examples of greenhouse gases.

The absorbed energy warms the atmosphere and the surface of the earth. In the absence of greenhouse gases, the average temperature of the earth's surface would be about -18 °C rather than the present average of 15 °C. The atmospheres of Venus, Mars and Titan also contain greenhouse gases. Therefore, option (d) is correct.
