Coding – Decoding (SSC CGL 2020 Tier 1)

Total Questions: 13

11. In a certain code language, 'LOWER' is coded as '186' and 'MULISH' is coded as '320'. How will 'OPTIONAL' be coded in that language? [S.S.C CGL 23/08/2021 (Morning)]

Correct Answer: (d) 456
Solution:Sum of positional values of opposite alphabets letter × total numbers of consonants in the word.
LOWER → 15 + 12 + 4 + 22 + 9 = 62
Number of consonant = 3
Product = 62 × 3 = 186

MULISH → 14 + 6 + 15 + 18 + 8 + 19 = 80
Number of consonant = 4
Product = 80 × 4 = 320

Similarly,

OPTIONAL → 12 + 11 + 7 + 18 + 12 + 13 + 26 + 15 = 114
Number of consonant = 4
Product = 114 × 4 = 456

12. In a certain code language, 'TRAVEL' is written as 'SUWBMF'. How will 'FROZEN' be written in that language? [S.S.C CGL 23/08/2021 (Afternoon)]

Correct Answer: (b) SGAPOF
Solution:Divide it into a group of 2 each and then reverse each group and then apply +1.

TRAVEL → TR - AV - EL and after reversing each group RT - VA - LE then apply + 1 it becomes SU - WB - MF

Similarly,

FROZEN → FR - OZ - EN and after reversing each group RF - ZO - NE then apply +1 it becomes SG - AP - OF.

13. In a certain code language, 'LOAD' is coded as '27241613' and 'CLEAN' is coded as '2725231614'. How will 'STRIKE' be coded in that language? [S.S.C CGL 23/08/2021 (Afternoon)]

Correct Answer: (d) 2319171098
Solution:Arrange all the letters in the alphabetical order and then subtract their alphabetical position from 28.

LOAD after arranging it becomes ADLO. Their alphabetical position is 1 - 4 - 12 - 15 and after subtracting from 28 we get 27 - 24 - 16 - 13.

Similarly,

STRIKE after arranging it becomes EIKRST. Their alphabetical position is 5 - 9 - 11 - 18 - 19 - 20 and after subtracting from 28 we get 23 - 19 - 17 - 10 - 9 - 8.
