In 1980's the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) was conceived by renowned scientist Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and under this programme AGNI, an intermediate range surface-to-surface ballistic missile was developed.

The exo-atmospheric hypersonic interceptor missiles of Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) can be deployed to guard the metros against air attack.

INS Sindhurakshak was a Russian-made diesel-electric sub-marine of the Indian Navy. The submarine suffered a minor fire incident in 2010 and a major one on 14 August, 2013, which resulted in its sinking at Mumbai's naval dockyard.
