As on 31 January 2022, there are 15 State Universities under the Higher Education Department in Uttar Pradesh, these are as follows:

The only open university of Uttar Pradesh (Rajarshi Tandon Open University) is located in Prayagraj. It was established in 1998.

University Grant Commission has published a list of recognised universities in different states in different categories on its website. The number of recognised universities in Uttar Pradesh in the list (as on 22.11.2021) is as follows-

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Agricultural University is situated in Meerut. It was inaugurated in 2002.

Dr. Rammanohar Lohiya National Law University is located in Lucknow. It is a State University, while other universities that are given in the option are central universities.

Two universities in Uttar Pradesh have been named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Agra University, established on 1 July, 1927, was renamed as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar university in 1996. It is State University. Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow was established as a central university on 10 January, 1996.

The oldest university in Uttar Pradesh is the University of Allahabad, Prayagraj. It was established in 1887. Hindu University, Varanasi was established in 1916. Chaudhari Charan Singh University, Meerut was established in 1965 and Lucknow University, Lucknow in 1921.

Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth is situated in Varanasi District of Uttar Pradesh. It was established by freedom fighter Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta in 1921 during Non-Cooperation Movement. Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta also launched a daily newspaper 'Aaj' on 5 September, 1920.

The first college for music education in Uttar Pradesh was 'Bhatkhande College of Hindustani Music'. With the efforts of Pt. Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, this institute was founded as "Marris College of Music" on 15 July, 1926.
