His tenure was from 1842 to 1844 AD.Lord Ellenborough served as Governor-General of India for two and a half years, ending in 1844. This pompous military general type of Governor dispatched to "restore peace in Asia," actually devastated Kabul upon arrival and later conquered Sind for Britain. As a result, Lord Ellenborough is best known for his role in the Conquest of Sind.
Ellenborough was responsible for several reforms. He abolished slavery. Forbade the use of lotteries to raise revenue for the improvement of Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay. He improved the Police administration by raising the compensation scale of the darogas and providing prospects for their advancement.
The class of officers known as Deputy Magistrates was constituted for the first time under Ellenborough.
