Governor-General Lord William Bentinck declared the practice of Sati a crime and abolished it. The burning of widows was declared illegal by Rule 17 (XVII) of December 1829.

Initially, this law was applicable only in Bengal Presidency, but in 1830 this rule became applicable in Bombay and Madras Presidencies also.

Lord William Bentinck appointed Captain Sleeman to take action against the thugs. He took about 1500 thugs captive. Many thugs were hanged. The rest were exiled for life. After 1837, thugee came to an end.

Lord Lytton (1876-1880 AD) is known for enacting the Vernacular Press Act of 1878 (Indigenous Press Act) in India. This act was called the Silencing Act. Cases were registered against 'Som Prakash", "Bharat Mihir', 'Dhaka Prakash', 'Sahachar' and many other newspapers under this Act.

In 1877, Viceroy Lord Lytton organized a durbar to declare Queen Victoria as the Empress of India.

Vernacular press act was introduced by Lord Lyt ton in the year 1878. It was enacted to suppress the voice the India press. In the year 1881, Lord Ripon repealed this Act.

The Ilbert Bill provided for the trial of European persons by Indians and sought equality between British and Indian Judges in the country.

It was introduced during the Viceroyship of Lord Ripon in 1883. It was written by Sir Courtenay Peregrine Ilbert who was a law member of the Viceroy's council.

Lord Dufferin was the Viceroy of India during the formation of the Indian National Congress.

Lord Curzon served as Viceroy of India from 1899 to 1905.

Lord Ripon (1880-1884) was the Viceroy of In- dia when the Illbert Bill was introduced in legis- lation.

Lord Irwin was the Viceroy of India from 1926- 1931

Lord Curzon (1899-1905) was the Viceroy of India when the Indian Universities Act of 1904 was passed. It is noteworthy that in the year 1902, the University Commission was formed under the chairmanship of Sir Thomas Raleigh.
