Mental Ability, Analytical and Logical Reasoning (UPSC) Part-VII

Total Questions: 50

41. Eight students A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H sit around a circular table, equidistant from each other facing the centre of the table not necessarily in the same order. B and D sit neither adjacent to C nor opposite to C. A sits in between E and D, and F sits in between B and H. Which one of the following is definitely correct? [2022-II]

Correct Answer: (d) None of the above
Solution:

Hence, none of the option is definitely correct.

42. A man started from home at 14:30 hours and drove to village, arriving there when the village clock indicated 15:15 hours. After staying for 25 minutes, he drove back by a different route of length 1.25 times the first route at a rate twice as fast reaching home at 16:00 hours. As compared to the clock at home, the village clock is [2022-II]

Correct Answer: (d) 5 minutes fast
Solution:

Let the village clock is t minutes faster than clock at home.
D = Distance between home and village
S = Normal speed of the man.
ATQ, Time from home to village:

d/s = (45-t) minutes

[Here, Time interval 15:15 − 14:30 = 45 minutes]

Again, total time from village to home

= 1.25d/2s = 20 + t        .....(ii)

[Here, Time interval 16:00 − (15:15 + 25) = 20 minutes]
From (i) and (ii):

1.25d/2s (45-t) = 20 + t

56.25 1.25t = 40 + 2t

or,

Hence, village clock is 5 minutes fast.

43. Six persons A, B, C, D, E and F are sitting equidistant from each other around a circular table (facing the centre of the table). [2022-II]

Consider the Question and two Statements given below :
Question: Who is sitting on the immediate left of A?
Statement-1: B is sitting opposite to C and D is sitting opposite to E
Statement-2: F is sitting on the immediate left of B.
Which one of the following is correct in respect of the the Question and the Statements?

Correct Answer: (d) Both Statement-1 and Statement-2 are not sufficient to answer the Question
Solution:

Here, either D or E is sitting immediate left of A.
Hence, both statement 1 and 2 are not sufficient to answer the question.

44. Six lectures A, B, C, D, E and F, each of one hour duration, are scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m [2022-II]

Consider the Question and two Statements given below:
Question: Which lecture is in the third period?
Statement-1: Lecture F is preceded by A and followed by C.
Statement-2: There is no lecture after lecture B.
Which one of the following is correct in respect of the Question and the Statements?

Correct Answer: (d) Both Statement-1 and Statement-2 are not sufficient to answer the Question
Solution:From statement 1 and 2 together:
Lectures are A, F, C, D, E, B or D, A, F, C, E, B,
or D, E, A, F, C, B and 3 more possibilities.
Hence, we cannot find out which lecture is at 3rd period.

45. Consider the following statements in respect of a rectangular sheet of length 20 cm and breadth 8 cm : [2022-II]

  1. It is possible to cut the sheet exactly into 4 square sheets.
  2. It is possible to cut the sheet into 10 triangular sheets of equal area

Which of the above statements is/are correct?

Correct Answer: (c) Both 1 and 2
Solution:

Statement 1 is correct as it is possible to cut the sheet into exactly into 4 squares.

∴ Total Area = 8 × 8 + 8 × 8 + 4 × 4 + 4 × 4 = 160 cm² = 20 × 8 = 160 cm²

Statement 2 is correct as it is possible to cut the sheet into 10 triangles of equal area.

46. Consider the following statements: [2022-II]

  1. Between 3:16 p.m. and 3:17 p.m., both hour hand and minute hand coincide.
  2. Between 4:58 p.m. and 4:59 p.m., both minute hand and second hand coincide.

Which of the above statements is/are correct?

Correct Answer: (c) Both 1 and 2
Solution:(1) Hour hand and minute hand coincide at the times 12:00, 1:05, 2:11, 3:16 and so on
(2) Minute hand and second hand coincide every minute.
Hence, two hands coincide between 4:58 p.m. and 4:59 p.m.

47. What is the value of X in the sequence [2022-II]

2, 12, 36, 80, 150, X?

Correct Answer: (b) 252
Solution:

The Pattern of the series is:

2 = (1²) + (1³)
12 = (2²) + (2³)
36 = (3²) + (3³)
80 = (4²) + (4³)
150 = (5²) + (5³)
252 = (6²) + (6³)

∴ X = 252

48. If 7⊕9⊕10 = 8, 9⊕11⊕30 = 5, 11⊕17⊕21 = 13, what is the value of 23⊕4⊕15? [2023-II]

Correct Answer: (a) 6
Solution:7 ⊕ 9 ⊕ 10 = 7 + 9 + 10 = 26 = 2 + 6 = 8
9 ⊕ 1 1⊕ 30 = 9 + 11 + 30 = 50 = 5 + 0 = 0
11 ⊕ 17 ⊕21 = 11 + 17 + 21 = 49 = 4 + 9 = 13
Similarly, 23 ⊕ 4 ⊕ 15 = 23 + 4 + 15 = 42 = 4 + 2 = 6

49. If 'ZERO' is written as 'CHUR' then how is 'PLAYER' written? [2023-II]

Solution:

50. Consider the following statements: [2023-II]

  1. A is older than B.
  2. C and D are of the same age.
  3. E is the youngest.
  4. F is younger than D.
  5. F is older than A.

How many statements given above are required to determine the person/persons?

Correct Answer: (d) All five
Solution:From given statements:
A > B, C = D, D > F > A
⇒ C = D > F > A > B > E
