The Mesolithic sites are much larger in number than those of the Palolithic and are better preserved. This is because by the end of the Pleistocene the land surface of the country, particularly in river basins, had assumed its present shape and there have been no significant disturbances in it by natural agencies like climate changes. Consequently the archaeological sites have not been disturbed by natural factors. During the Mesolithic period natural caves and rock shelters were occupied.
