The optimum theory of population is a theory that states that there is an ideal population size for a country that will result in the highest per capital income or return. It was proposed by Edwin Cannon in his 1924 book wealth.

The theory is based on two assumptions:

1. The proportion of working population to total population remains constant as the population increases.
2. Natural resources, capital stock, and technology remain unchanged as the population increases.
