Aryabhatta was the first satellite launched by India. It was named after the great Indian astronomer of the same name. Aryabhatta weighed 360 kg and was launched by the Soviet Union on April 19, 1975 from Kapustin Yar using a Cosmos-3M launch vehicle.

Prof. U.R. Rao was the scientist who designed India's first space satellite 'Aryabhatta'. Rao undertook the responsibility for the establishment of satellite technology in India in 1972. Under his guidance, beginning with the first Indian satellite 'Aryabhatta' in 1975, over 18 satellites were designed, fabricated and launched.

Rao also served as the chairman of ISRO for 10 years from 1984-1994. He passed away at the age of 85 on 24 July, 2017.

Laika was a Soviet space dog who became the first animal to orbit the earth in space. Laika, a stray dog from the streets of Moscow, was selected to be the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 that was launched into outer space on November 3, 1957.

On November 3ʳᵈ, 1957 a dog, named 'Laika' was sent to space- through Sputnik-2 spacecraft. On 28 May, 1959 monkeys named 'Able' and 'Baker' were sent to space. On August 19, 1960 a dog named 'Belka' was sent to space through Sputnik-5 spacecraft. On 28 January, 2013 Iran sent a monkey into space by Pisgaman rocket.

On 12 April, 1961 astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space by Vostok-1 Russian spacecraft. Astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space less than a month later.

Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin was the first male astronaut in space while Velentina Tereshkova (Russian cosmonaut) became the first women to fly to space, when she launched on the Vostok-6 mission on 16 June, 1963. She spent almost three days in space and orbited Earth 48 times.
