Time, Speed and Distance (Part-2)

Total Questions: 50

11. A person has to cover a distance of 8 km in 1 hour. If he covers one-fourth of the distance in one-third of the total time, then what should his speed (in km/h) be to cover the remaining distance in the remaining time so that the person reaches the destination exactly on time? [SSC MTS 07/10/2024 (Evening)]

Correct Answer: (c) 9
Solution:

12. A thief saw a policeman and he started running at a speed of 12 m/s. After a certain time, the policeman starts running behind the thief at a speed of 18 m/s. If the policeman covered a 540 m distance to catch the thief, the time (in seconds) after which the policeman started running is: [SSC MTS 08/10/2024 (Morning)]

Correct Answer: (c) 15
Solution:Time taken by police to catch the thief
= 540/18 = 30 second
Distance covered by police = 540 meter
Let thief runs for t seconds
Then, total distance covered by thief = 12t
Both covers the same distance, so by equating the distance covered by both 540 12t ⇒ t = 45 seconds
Hence, required time = (45 - 30) = 15 seconds.

13. A fast train takes 1 hour less than a slow train for a journey of 96 km. If the speed of the slow train is 8 km/h less than that of the fast train, then find the speeds of the fast train and slow train respectively. [SSC MTS 08/10/2024 (Evening)]

Correct Answer: (b) 32 km/h, 24 km/h
Solution:Let the speed of slow train and fast train be x and y respectively, According to question,
96/x - 96/y =1....(i)
After checking all the options one by one, only option (b) satisfied.
Hence, the speed of slow train = 24 km/h and speed of fast train = 32 km/h
