In a civil hospital of City A, there were 500 live births in the year January 2019. Out of which 100 infants had birth weight less than 2.5 kg.

Observing high proportion of low birth weight babies, an epidemiologist decided to do a study to find out the association between birthweight and infant deaths. A study design was developed and all 500 infants were followed up for one year.

At the end of one year, 24 infants died among 500 infants who were under observation. Out of 24 deaths, 16 deaths were observed among low birth weight babies.

After the analysis, Epidemiologist concluded that low birth weight infants are at higher risk of dying than normal birth weight infants.
