• Jharia represents the largest coal reserves in India having estimated reserves of 19.4 billion tonnes of coking coal.

• The coal field lies in the Damodar River Valley and produces bituminous coal suitable for coke.

• Jet streams play an important role in bringing these disturbances to India.

• Western disturbances are generally active from December to February.

• The forest is categorized as part of the Upper Gangetic Plains moist deciduous forests.

• The dominant vegetation in the forest is of the hardwood sal (Shorea robusta).
