As per the information received till January 2021, the state of Maharashtra had the largest number of large dams.

Farakka Barrage was constructed across the Ganges River in the state of West Bengal. Its main purpose was to supply water to clear the silt at the port of Kolkata. Apart from this, deposited it was also to facilitate navigation of ships along the Ganges River and to prevent erosion of Kolkata Port, while not intended to stop the water flow to Bangladesh.

Dantiwada Dam was built across the Banas River in Gujarat. The height of this dam is 61 m and the length 4832 m. This dam was constructed for the purpose irrigation and flood control.

The state of Rajasthan does not fall in the basin of the Tapti river, while the states of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra fall in the basin of the Tapti River The Tapti River has its origin in the Satpura ranges (Multan) in the Betul district of Madhya Pradesh. This river also

Somashila Dam is located in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh state. This dam is built across the Pennar (North Pinakini) river.

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is built across the Krishna River.

Nizam Sagar Dam is located in the state of Telangana The dam is built across the Manjira River, a tributary of the Godavari river and located between the villages of Achampet and Banjepalli in the Kamareddy district.

Jayakwadi Dam is built across the Godavari River This dam is located in Paithan taluka of Aurangabad district in Maharashtra.
